چکیده

The significance of steroid and peptide hormones for tumour initiation and progression in a number of organs and tissues of various species including humans has been demonstrated by numerous experimental and epidemiological studies. More recently different hormone-stimulated signal transduction pathways have been partly unravelled and their components have been identified and characterised. There is now increasing evidence of stimulatory or inhibitory interaction of different signalling pathways. The research group ”Hormones and Signal Transduction” , which was established in October 1999, focuses their interest to the study of the mechanisms of tumour induction and progression by steroid hormones in liver and breast epithelial cells as well as to hormone-controlled gene expression and the interaction of steroids with components of other cellular signal transduction pathways. Persistent Organochlorine Pollutants with Endocrine Activity and Blood Steroid Hormone Levels in Middle-Aged Men

BACKGROUND Studies relating long-term exposure to persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) with endocrine activities (endocrine disrupting chemicals) on circulating levels of steroid hormones have been limited to a small number of hormones and reported conflicting results. OBJECTIVE We examined the relationship between serum concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone ...

Flaxseed consumption influences endogenous hormone concentrations in postmenopausal women.

Lignans, similar in structure to endogenous sex steroid hormones, may act in vivo to alter hormone metabolism and subsequent cancer risk. The objective of this study was to examine effects of dietary intake of a lignan-rich plant food (flaxseed) on serum concentrations of endogenous hormones and binding proteins (estrone, estrone sulfate, 17 beta-estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin, progest...

Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEAS) Stimulates the First Step in the Biosynthesis of Steroid Hormones

Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) is the most abundant circulating steroid in human, with the highest concentrations between age 20 and 30, but displaying a significant decrease with age. Many beneficial functions are ascribed to DHEAS. Nevertheless, long-term studies are very scarce concerning the intake of DHEAS over several years, and molecular investigations on DHEAS action are missing...

Endocrine responses to marathon running.

We have examined the hormone status of ten healthy adult males who completed the Glasgow marathon. Serum thyroxine, free thyroxine, triiodothyronine and thyroid stimulating hormone were unaffected by the exertion. Serum cortisol as well as other steroid hormones, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate and oestradiol showed distinct rises (p less than 0.01) but serum testosterone fell ...

DHEA-induced antiproliferative effect in MCF-7 cells is androgen- and estrogen receptor-independent.

Dehydroepiandrosterone, an adrenal hormone derived from cholesterol, can be metabolized to estrogens (estradiol) and androgens (testosterone). In this study, we evaluated whether the antiproliferative effect induced by dehydroepiandrosterone in MCF-7 cells (an estrogen-dependent breast cancer cell line) is direct, or indirect, through its conversion to estradiol or testosterone. Although dehydr...
